Mouse sample imaged in 3D with HREM

3D Imaging

Imaging Whole Biological Samples in 3D including Bone and Dense Tissue and Agricultural Samples in High Resolution

Introduction to 3D Imaging

3D imaging enables the capture of entire sample volumes, providing precise X, Y, and Z measurements for a deeper spatial understanding of data. This perspective allows for more accurate analysis of complex structures, such as the cardiovascular system or whole embryos, revealing details that would be lost in 2D imaging.

High-Resolution Episcopic Microscopy (HREM) and Its Impact on 3D Imaging

HREM is a 3D block-face imaging technique designed for high-contrast visualisation of whole structures. By integrating a specialised microtome with advanced optics, it generates detailed 2D images that collectively form a complete volumetric dataset.

Optical HREM systems support various block-face imaging and fluorescence techniques, making them ideal for high-density samples. With sub-micron XY resolution and a Z resolution of 1 micron, HREM delivers powerful 3D data for precise analysis.

3D Imaging Examples and Applications

3D imaging enables high-resolution visualisation and analysis of diverse biological and agricultural samples, providing detailed structural and morphological insights. Key applications include:

  • Cardiovascular Research – High-resolution imaging of mouse hearts and vascular systems for studying congenital heart defects and developmental anomalies.

  • Embryo Morphology & Gene Expression – Whole-embryo imaging to analyse structural development, gene expression patterns, and phenotypic variations.

  • Agricultural & Plant Science – 3D imaging of crops and biological specimens, including barley, citrus fruit, and chicken embryos, for developmental studies and genetic research.
